Someone needs to find out where Bad City is hiding their time machine. There is just no other explanation for how they produced such a quintessentially 80s hair metal sound on their debut album Welcome to the Wasteland. Formed from two disbanded pop rock bands (Powerspace, Thee Armada) this album might not appeal to their original fan bases, but for anyone looking for an album that is truly a rock record, they can look no further.

After The Matches disbanded, guitarist Jonathan Devoto stepped up to play the role of front man in his new California-based rock band, Bird by Bird. The band’s debut E.P., Albatross, shows off Devoto’s skills as a guitarist as well as a vocalist. His raspy vocals on occasion are similar to that of former Matches vocalist Shawn Harris. These songs have an appeal that will please fans of his previous work while having the capability of reaching beyond that audience.

On July 30 and 31, both local and national acts played two days of music at the Vineyard for A.R.M. Fest, which stands for Anonymous Relief Mission.  The organization helps area individuals in transitional periods, and more information on the organization is available at armonlinehelp.org. 

Black Squirrel Radio talked to one of the performing bands, Pittsburgh’s A Voice Like Rhetoric. Interview: Steel Train

New Jersey indie band Steel Train recently released their third full-length, and first self-released, record, “Steel Train,” via their new label Terrible Thrills. The self-titled release also features an accompanying record, Terrible Thrills Vol. 1, featuring a different female vocalist covering each track on “Steel Train.” The band pressed the record on red and blue vinyl, which they made available during their recent tour with Girl in a Coma. Black Squirrel Radio caught up with vocalist, guitarist Jack Antonoff when the tour stopped by Cleveland Friday. More information on Steel Train is available at www.steeltrain.net.
