She also explained that Kelly’s jeans had a mixture of DNA that matched himself, Kernich and at least one other person. Ebeieth said that DNA is unique to the person. “One person out of billions times the world’s population” she said. The court opened on Wednesday to heart breaking graphic photos of Kernich’s autopsy. Dr. George Sterbenz, the Summit County Chief Deputy Medical Examiner then testified that Kernich’s death was a homicide caused by blunt force trama from multiple blows to the head. Sterbenz explained that Kernich was neurologically dead by Novemebr 21st, meaning that while his heart was still beating, his brain was no longer alive and was starting to decompose. During the autopsy, Sterbenz noted several lacerations or cuts on Kernich’s back, elbows, hands, face and the back of his head. Sterbenz described the autopsy more in depth, explaining that a fracture was found on the left side of Kernich’s skull and that the brain contusions were more sever on the left side. Sterbenz then concluded that Kernich’s injurys were caused by a “posterior rotational fall” simply meaning that when he fell, it caused a shock wave to travel though the front of his skull. Multiple blows to the skull caused the brain to swell, as blood flow was disrupted, the brain lacked oxygen and became soft. Sterbenz called this phnomonon a “respiorater brain” – the physical manifestation of brain death. The prosecution also called Kent Police Detective Mark Djerome. Djerome testified that he found no indication on Glen Jefferson’s shoes and they were given back after other officers examined them. There was no attempt made to examine Jefferson’s clothes until March 29, days after he admitted to lying to a grand jury. Djerome also explained that he did believe that Jefferson had been involved in the beating because Barker and Ronald Kelly had implicated each other. The trial will continue at 8:30 Thursday morning.
