Hey sports fans! Here is your kent state update for today!

Honoring the Past on Saturday

Mark Gockowski | BSR Sports

As we approach the ten year anniversary of the 2002 Kent State men’s basketball’s miracle run to the elite 8 in the NCAA tournament, memories from that energetic season are still deep in our minds. Led by head coach Stan Heath, "excellence in action" couldn’t even describe this team as they went 30-6 overall that season, capturing not even the MAC east title but the MAC championship title.

Starting the season 4-4, Kent State fans didn’t have much hope for the team created by the recruiting of current Cleveland State coach Gary Waters. The first 4 losses for the Cinderella team of 2002 came against Hofstra, Kentucky, Youngstown State, and Xavier. Any basketball analyst around would have never seen this struggling team having a chance to win the National championship.

Then the wheels began to turn as the Flashes went 26-2 in the next 28 games, ending against tough 3 point shooting Jared Jeffries and the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers went on to lose to the Maryland Terps in the National Championship Game.

Most of the men from the 2001-2002 Golden flashes went on to pursue different careers outside basketball. While Trevor Huffman and Andrew Mitchell turned to Europe to extend their basketball careers, and Stan Heath left for the University of Arkansas.

Nothing would compare to the future for junior forward Antonio Gates. Gates took his talents to the NFL, becoming one of the most prolific  tight ends the league has ever seen. An 8-time pro-bowler, Gates was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2003. As only one of seven tight ends ever to catch 500 or more receptions, Antonio Gates will be seeing Canton, Ohio in his future, only 30 miles from Kent State University.

So besides a brief, nostalgic look at some of KSU's finest athletes, what's the point I'm getting at?

The 2002 Elite-8 squad will be honored Saturday February 18th during the game against College of Charleston, and it's important for true blue and gold fans to be there. The Kent State Men’s basketball program was built on the success from that special group of kids as it has had 12 twenty win seasons in the past 13 seasons, and looking to add another this current season.
